On Lagom (pronounced “lar-gohm”)

It means “Not too little. Not too much. Just right.”

For Swedes, lagom is a lifestyle, a habit of mind. ‘There’s an internal mindset of acceptance and contentment in Sweden. That’s part of the secret to being happy — don’t obsess about it.

On silence

One of the best pieces of advice was from my Year Two teacher, on how to draw a bicycle: “Spend twice as much time _looking_ at it than drawing it”. I apply that to so many areas. More time listening than talking. More observing than doing. The outcome will always be better.

On needing rivals

At one point you tip your hat: you’re very good. I take joy after realising: you cannot just be alone at the top. You need rivals. I’m thankful to these guys, to make me a better player.
